configure.py script

Hi,

 

I have downloaded the version 2.3.3-p3.

There is one file under "config" folder viz "configure.py". I am building
the library on Red Hat Linux 9.

 

I saw some makefiles already there in the downloaded package.

Then what is the use of "configure.py" script? I have no idea about python
code, But I redirected the output of configure and came to know it is
testing some folders.

 

As per my knowledge, configure script is used to generate makefiles.

What is the use of configure script in PETSc 2.3.3-p3 version?
