Brad:

Thanks for your feedback. We've been working with this code for months,
and have been fixing problems as we discover them. I'm sure there are
still problems; you'll find them described in the AG bugzilla
(bugzilla.mcs.anl.gov/accessgrid), which I know you're familiar with.
We're committed to fixing these problems as quickly as possible to get
to a high quality final release. With the help of beta testers, we'll
get to a higher quality release more quickly, so feedback is always
welcome. Liberal feedback. We've always encouraged people to report
problems they encounter, whether they appear to be small problems, or
the user is uncertain if a problem actually occurred. Provide enough
information and we'll determine if it's a problem, and fix it. Patches
to fix problems are, of course, also welcome.

I'll address some of your issues here, and you can report them to
bugzilla with the appropriate level of detail. We have in the past
recommended that people review this page before submitting bugs:

    http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html

This helps people to provide all the necessary information (platform,
hardware, logfiles, and a complete description of the problem that will,
hopefully, allow the developers to reproduce it). Now, on to the issues
you raised:

What service(s) are loaded when it comes up? What services do you
add/remove? Have you saved the configuration after adding/removing
services?

Did you somehow determine that nothing was being transmitted? Have you
tested audio with some remote person, or captured outgoing packets perhaps?

Very precisely, what were you doing when this happened? There does seem
to be an issue with wxPython windows not becoming active, but I haven't
seen this as persistently as you describe.

In our case, Argonne == cybersecurity and Home network == NAT. We've
worked in a variety of constrained environments. Can you describe in
detail the firewall errors? We certainly need better support for
firewall traversal, including limiting the number and range of ports
used. A clean description of your concerns will help. Putting that in
a bug report will allow others to comment on their experiences, too.

That might be helpful, but even it would need to be accompanied by some
additional detail like log files, etc., to completely frame the problems.

Thanks again,

Tom Uram
