I suspect that the globus-env stuff that needs to be sourced isn't until 
the X session is restarted.

Which audio drivers is your system using? I believe we've used rat on an 
i810 (that's what my linux box at home has, and I'm pretty sure I've used 
rat on there; that was with the opensound.com drivers).

Depending on the mic you have, you may have to turn on the mic boost 
setting that I think the SBLive has (it's a +20dB boost). Exactly how to do 
that depends on which drivers you're using.
