Thanks for those comments, Bob. Looks like that's a green light
to pursue the ALSA drivers and apps. I'm away for the next 10
working days but will do some downloads and tests when I get back.
One thing that it will bring us closer to is a fully fledged AG node
in a single computer - fewer cards needed. Guess I might have
a look at multi-channel video capture cards as well - quite a few
do 4 streams on 1 card these days.

I've just started looking a bit more seriously at multi-channel audio
cards in the context of AG. One reason is a general interest in spatial
placement of sound (audio follow video to misuse a term!) and the
other is as a way of underpinning the idea of a global gig.
It appears that ALSA drivers cover a wider range of multi-channel
cards than OSS, and happen to include a driver for the cards I have
in my studio, the Korg 1212 I/O.
Cool. We've got a midiman delta 44 that we've played with some, but not as
much as we'd like :-).
Does anyone have comments concerning how the ALSA drivers work
in an AG context? I note that amongst the applications, there are some
files in .../mbone/rat/... that may be relevant. At this point I'm only
exploring audio under Linux, not Windows.
I ported rat to the 0.5 version of the ALSA drivers (auddev_alsa in the rat
distribution). I like the ALSA drivers much better than OSS, and only partly
because they're free. They are going to be the audio drivers in the 2.6
linux kernel chain (they are there now in 2.5). Updating that port to the
0.9 version would be a good thing.
I don't want to pursue possible use of these drivers - when we are quite
happy with the OSS drivers - if there are any fundamental problems.
For the professional multichannel cards, I suspect we will be happier with
