well now condor was the traditional answer for that, but it didn't work 
very well in practice.

the really big blocker i found on workstation pools was that they tended 
to not have a shared file system, which was totally at odds with swift's 
site model of the time.

maybe that's not so much of a problem anymore, if there are other ways of 
staging data.
