concurrent mapper makes complicated looking directory hierarchies so that large
structures mapped with concurrent mapper are GPFS-friendly.

An option could be added to other mappers to allow such hierarchies to be
appended to the directories used in (for example) simple_mapper, whilst still
allowing prefix, suffix specification and the existing filename construction
rules based on array and structure membership.
