Sounds like a problem with nohup/ssh. Isn't the whole point of nohup to
prevent sending HUP to the application? Is the shell the same (interactive
and login) via the terminal and via ssh?

Is there a reason you don't want to run the job in a screen or tmux session?
(I have always found that preferable to using nohup.)
