question -- configure PETSC to exploit multicore machine

Just install PETSc with MPI - for eg: with the configure option
'--download-mpich=1'

Now when you run with 'mpiexec -np 8 binary', the 8 MPI processes will
be spawned on this machine - and the OS will make sure that each of
the 8 cores are allocated to each of the 8 MPI processes.
