This could be a good opportunity to come up with an approach to talking
about AI in science in the rather benign context of docs and examples that
both of you would find acceptable.
This is something that can be done and something that will have to be done.
You need to nuance of knowledge. AI is real and as scientists we have to be
able to talk about real things with integrity.
For example, "hire a creative graduate student to develop a workflow for
curating the extensive body of tutorials and tests, as well as PETSc's
documentation with access to modern tools such as, but not limited to, ...
and name some tool like Sphynx (?) , git, CI, AI, LLMs, and apply that
workflow to the PETSc repo".
You could then talk about these tools dispassionately (because the person
doing the work will make these decisions) and get AI text in there without
saying it will replace humans. Just say what it does.
