yes - such issues [with huge attachments] shouldn't flood mailing list
user mailboxes - and are best sent to petsc-maint.

suggestion is to use:
CC=/sw/lib/gcc4.4/bin/gcc-4 CFLAGS=-malign-double

[instead of CC="/sw/lib/gcc4.4/bin/gcc-4 -malign-double"]
