make install error on Cray XT4

Hi mark.  Not long after posting the release, Wei-keng found this
problem, too.  

I've committed the fix in revision 713.  It is very simple if you want
to apply by hand

We've fixed a few defects since the release.  Probably will roll them
up into a bugfix release soon.
