MPICH2's Makefiles get regenerated if you rerun configure, so I assume
you modified the Makefiles after running configure.

This looks like a Makefile timestamp issue due to different filesystem(s).
Try building mpich2 with both source and build directories in the
SAME LOCAL filesystem.
