Have you considered installing your own copy of the latest release? At
least *nix-like systems, you can build and install MPICH2 fully within
user space. As long as you specify a writable --prefix (e.g. within
your home dir, as opposed to a central one like /usr), you shouldn't
ever need root or any special privileges.
