It's hard to say what the problem is, although it sounds like a  
networking configuration problem.  Did you try the troubleshooting  
steps listed in Appendix A of the Installer's Guide?  In particular,  
did you try the steps that use the "mpdcheck" utility?

Alternatively, you can try the Hydra process manager instead: http://wiki.mcs.anl.gov/mpich2/index.php/Using_the_Hydra_Process_Manager
