[mpich-discuss] A Windows 7 implementation question

Yes, if one logs in as the same user in the foreground, or logs on remotely then you can run in the background, but, and here's the rub, if you log in remotely say, if there was/is a foreground user that is different, they get knocked off. So essentially everyone has to run with the same ID to not be impacted. On a normal grid none of this is a problem, but when you're trying to have a "poor mans" grid and get simultaneous use out of the boxes as normal workstations, it becomes an issue.

Hi,
Are you able to run MPI programs as the "background user", locally on the machine, after logging in as the "background user" (Login as the background user, Register the background user using "mpiexec -register" , Try running programs as the background user "mpiexec -n 2 hostname" )?

Regards,
Jayesh

No expert, we're walking the minefield for everyone else, but you're suggestion is one that sounds worth following up on. Thanks, as long as I have ideas, then there's hope for a practical solution.

I have no expertise in the matter, but I’d bet that there is a ‘group policy’ setting/object somewhere that will allow you to enable background tasks/processes from other users via remote connections. Do you have some expert administrator for windows stuff that might know? (I tried googling, but there were too many unrelated hits).

4 - Am I overlooking some other obvious solution that would be easier and solve all these problems beyond having to buy a whole new set of dedicated systems to run as a full time test cluster (right now I'll never get funding for that but I realize that is the solution that SHOULD be done, but I don't have anyone to bankroll it).
