MPD isn't built by default in modern MPICH2.  Just use the newer process manager, hydra, instead: http://wiki.mcs.anl.gov/mpich2/index.php/Using_the_Hydra_Process_Manager

It's easier, faster, and more robust.  And it doesn't require an mpdboot step.
