You can usually run it between two different versions of Linux, for example, provided that both machines have the same type of processor.  Also, both should be running either 64-bit or 32-bit, not a mix.

Windows+Linux is theoretically possible (given the same restrictions as above), but I personally wouldn't bother with it.  It's probably more pain than it's worth and may not work in the end.
