Just as an experiment, can you try configuring mpich2 with
--with-device=ch3:sock, run make clean, make, and make install, and see
if that makes any difference?

Can you also test with installing the MPICH2 rpms ('just run "yum
install mpich2*"), after you've removed (or moved aside) your
previously self-built copy?

The yum install went well, as did the single-machine tests described in
the installer's guide.
Could not find test_barriers* in the file system.
Built the attached pi code. The build went well but would not execute:
[Guest at Hack03 Download]$ ls
pi.cxx
[Guest at Hack03 Download]$ mpicxx pi.cxx -o pi
[Guest at Hack03 Download]$ ./pi
Illegal instruction
