  Using the WIX toolkit would require developers (MPICH2 developers on
windows) to install another software toolkit. I don't think adding a
dependency on another toolkit might be a good idea. I will check this with
our Microsoft contacts and let you know what they think about it.

The MSI files require the Visual Studio 2005 SP1 redistributable and dotNet
2.0. Sometimes dotNet 2.0 setup may also require Windows Installer 3.0 if
that redistributable is not installed. Ideally, all these dependencies
should not be required on production systems. As an alternative, the setup
project can be converted into an xml file that is compiled through
WiX.sourceforge.net. I could contribute to this, if it gets approved.
