=======================================================

This Special Issue of SIMULATION aims to shine a spotlight on
groundbreaking advances in using distributed intelligence-inspired
simulations to understand and enhance cyberinfrastructure and
cyber-physical systems. This issue is specially focused on novel
simulation and modeling techniques required for accurately and
efficiently capturing the salient properties of disaggregated or
distributed digital systems, physical facilities and processes, and
human interactions with our physical and digital environment.

In this context, we intend to capture a comprehensive landscape of the
current state-of-the-art and forecast future directions in systems
modeling and simulation techniques, models, practices, systems,
platforms, software, applications of AI to simulation, high
performance computing (HPC) for simulation, simulation performance
analysis, and applications.

Recognizing the importance of the convergence of multiple disciplines
in current scientific and technical advances, we encourage
contributions from interdisciplinary areas, such as: Smart
Transportation, Smart Cities, Complex Systems, Environmental
challenges, Healthcare Big Data, Bioinformatics, modeling and analysis
of Communication Networks, Societal challenges, Digital Humanities,
Network Security, ICT Infrastructure, Intelligent Manufacturing,
Intelligent Business, Fault Diagnosis, Engineering applications, Big
Data simulation analysis, etc.

The authors can propose recent advances on topics that include, but
are not limited to:
• Simulation methods: discrete event, parallel and distributed
simulation, hybrid simulation, multi- scale simulation, etc.
• Simulation techniques: service-oriented, agent-based, web-based,
cloud-based, component-based, symbiotic simulation.
• Modeling formalisms: DEVS, cellular automata, lattice-Boltzmann,
membrane computing, P-systems, Petri Nets, process algebras, state
charts, and others.
• Simulation performance: HPC for simulation, GPU-based simulation,
simulation in the cloud, scalability, performance analysis,
benchmarks, optimization.
• Simulation software: environments, tools, libraries, and frameworks.
• Simulation verification, validation, accreditation, and analysis.
• Simulation for the design and evaluation of physical and
cyber-physical infrastructure, paradigms, and processes.
• Simulations for enhancing human interactions with the built environment.
• Simulation-based design and evaluation of emerging Artificial
Intelligence (AI)-integrated cyberinfrastructure.
• Modeling and simulation of decision making in behavior-driven scenarios.
• Edge Computing, Fog Computing, Decentralized systems and Internet of
Things (IoT) simulation solutions.
• Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enhanced modeling and simulation of
systems and processes.
• Simulation-based assessment of the impact of emerging
cyberinfrastructure and cyber-physical systems on society and human
activity.
• Complex systems combining simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL).
