***ABOUT***
Since the introduction of its core concepts more than a decade ago, research on big data and data science has advanced rapidly. Novel paradigms such as software-defined *, cyber-physical systems, computing continuum, and distributed analytics have been proposed and supported by technical advancements such as improved storage and faster processing. With the recent IT-related developments (including machine learning and artificial intelligence), all these approaches and technologies have significantly boosted the importance of (big) data governance and data science.

Today, policymakers, administrations, and governments globally recognize the importance of data in today's digital society, and several initiatives are underway. For instance, the European Union is creating a trustworthy ecosystem where the power hidden in data can be fully unleashed, creating new business opportunities without sacrificing security and privacy (e.g., Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, Data Act, Data Governance Act). Similarly, the United States is improving its digital services to citizens while increasing ecosystem trustworthiness, security, and privacy (e.g., Digital Government Strategy, National Cybersecurity Strategy). Japan is working towards a society blending the physical and cyber spaces to create new value and improve society (Integrated Innovation Strategy). The African Union is leapfrogging towards an innovative and inclusive society growth based on a Digital Single Market (e.g., The Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa).

This data revolution provides plenty of opportunities but introduces new gaps and challenges. Data sharing and value extraction happen at an unprecedented scale, with novel requirements on authorization and authentication, data governance, privacy, trust management, latency, to name but a few.

This special issue aims to cover the most recent advances in the area of big data and data science towards the creation of virtual (data) spaces, where data can be pooled and shared to maximize utility and trustworthiness while guaranteeing regulatory and legal compliance. These virtual spaces are emerging as a main solution for new-generation data-based applications, but several challenges (target of this special issue) remain open from both research and application standpoints. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

- Frameworks, architectures, and platforms for data governance
- Data modeling and trusted data sharing
- Digital/data sovereignty
- Big data and AI for social good and beyond
- Data governance in high-performance computing
- Ethical data management and analysis
- Novel applications and case studies of data management and governance
