In conjunction with SC21: The International Conference for
High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis,
       Friday morning November 19, 2021
         In cooperation with IEEE TCHPC.

========================================================================

When: Friday 19th November, 8:30am to 12 noon
Where: Room 240, 241, 242 and also online via the HUBB platform

We have a fascinating schedule, starting with an invited talk by John
Towns who will be talking about the establishment, operation, and
impacts of the COVID-19 HPC Consortium. This has been unprecedented and
involved a partnership spanning academia, government and industry. Over
100 research teams have been empowered by this effort to respond to the
COVID-19 pandemic and the result has been scores of publications,
models, data collections, tools, and other resources. Furthermore, the
consortium has supported and informed both the national and
international response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

John will reflect on the successes and challenges that have been faced
by the consortium, which is especially topical because the experience
suggests a model for domestic and global collaboration in response to
crises. There is discussion that this could be sustained as a National
Strategic Computing Reserve to ensure the nation is prepared for future
crises. John will also explore lessons learnt from this work of the past
18 months which should improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the
national research complex in responding to natural and man-made crises
as well as to address the need to enable innovation and high-risk, high
reward research.

Following John's invited talk there will be six excellent research
papers covering the state of the art in using HPC for urgent decision
making and these involve a wide range of activities from the
technological underpinning to higher level success stories including
tackling COVID-19 and mosquito-borne diseases.

More details and the full workshop schedule are available on the SC
website, HUBB platform, and at https://www.urgenthpc.com
