CONTEXT

In the last few years, Edge Computing has attracted more attention due to its huge potential in scenarios where the traditional cloud fails to meet certain quality requirements. Many of the major IT companies and start-ups envision edge computing as i) a key enabler for IoT infrastructures and services, by providing the needed processing and storage capacities often limited in the IoT devices ii) allow cloud resources to be closer to data sources, which allows higher performance and context aware services, iii) increase security and privacy by placing security checks closer to the data sources. From a business point of view, organizations can benefit from the distributed nature of edge computing to deploy dedicated services on a context or time based to serve certain areas. From a technological perspective, the scalability, interoperability, and efficient (de-)allocation of resources at the edge can enable a whole new set of scenarios in the context of IoT.

Given the potential benefits of edgification, an increasing number of organizations are investigating the potential of extending their cloud environments by placing some of their services on the edge. Regardless of the benefits of edgification however, many organizations still prefer to deploy their systems in the main cloud and try to invest more on improving their services quality using traditional methods such as auto-scaling, caching and microservices. Many organizations still need to be educated about the potential of edge computing as well as what parts of their existing systems can benefit from it. Therefore, it is mandatory to develop methods, tools and frameworks to help introducing edgification coupled with a clear process of edge migration.

The 1st International Workshop on Edge Adoption and Migration (EdgeWays 2020) aims to bring together cloud and edge computing experts from academia and industry from different IT communities, e.g., edge computing, cloud computing, IoT, software engineering, services computing, big data, information systems, etc. Its main goals are to promote discussions and collaboration amongst participants, to help disseminate novel edge computing practices and solutions, and to identify future edge computing challenges and dimensions. To this end, the workshop will foster a more interactive participation model, in which authors, invited speakers and attendees will be encouraged to socially engage beyond the planned workshop activities.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We seek submissions of both full and short papers. Full papers (maximum 12 pages) should describe original research, empirical studies or experience reports on cloud architectures, adoption and migration, while short papers (maximum 8 pages) should describe on-going research or early empirical results. All papers must be written in English and follow Springer's LNCS formatting instructions <http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0>. Papers must be submitted in PDF using the EasyChair online submission <https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=edgeways20>.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least three members of the international program committee. Paper acceptance will be based on originality, significance, technical soundness, clarity of presentation, and their adequacy to the workshop. Accepted papers will appear in a joint ESOCC 2020 Workshops Proceedings to be published in Springer's Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series. We are also considering the possibility to invite authors of the workshop's best papers to publish extended versions of their work in a special issue of a related international journal or in a book on cloud migration.

At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop. Registration is subject to the terms, conditions and procedure of the main ESOCC 2020 conference.
