                          Call for Position Papers:
Grand Challenges in Computer Systems Research

                An NSF-Sponsored Community Visioning Workshop
             https://www.asplos2018.org/program/grandchallenges <https://www.asplos2018.org/program/grandchallenges>

It is now a time of wrenching changes in computer systems research. The community
is researching an unprecedentedly broad range of topics, ranging from the small
(internet of things) to the large (exascale datacenters), simultaneously addressing
technology discontinuities (End of Moore's Law and Energy Wall), new challenges
in security and privacy, and the rise of artificial intelligence.

It is in this context that NSF is sponsoring a community visioning workshop on
Grand Challenges in Computer Systems Research on a 10-15 year horizon. This
workshop will focus on architecture, operating systems, and programming systems,
and be co-located with ASPLOS. The workshop will be organized around a few topics:
Internet of Things and Infrastructure; Augmenting Human Abilities and AI; Security
and Privacy; Complexity Management; and any additional topics that attendees
wish to put forward.

The workshop will take place on Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25 in
Williamsburg, VA, as part of the ASPLOS workshops. It will have two parts. The
first day will be open to everyone, and consist of keynotes and interactive panels.
The second day will be open to invited researchers only, who will brainstorm and
produce a report for NSF.

Researchers who would like to be invited to participate in the second day are
encouraged to send a one-page position paper outlining their thoughts on research
agendas around one of the topics listed above---with an emphasis on interdisciplinary
research. The attendees will be picked based on the submitted position papers.

Submit a 1-page PDF file to research_challenges at cs.illinois.edu <mailto:research_challenges at cs.illinois.edu> by 6pm CST,
Saturday Feb 10th, 2018 (updated deadline).

Organizing Committee

Albert Cohen (INRIA), Josep Torrellas (University of Illinois), Yuanyuan Zhou
(University of California, San Diego), Xipeng Shen (North Carolina State University),
and James Tuck (North Carolina State University).
