Special Issue on
Energy Efficient Large Scale Distributed Systems
of the The Future Generation Computer Systems Journal (2011 Impact Factor 1.978)

============================================================

With an increasing cost and environmental impact, energy consumption in large scale and distributed systems, such as grid and cloud architectures, has become the new global IT concern in governments, organizations, and companies. Indeed, they require huge amounts of electrical power consumption, and most of the energy is usually spent to cool the underutilized high-end computing servers.

Therefore, the minimization of energy consumption has become a central issue in designing distributed systems. Specially, the relevance of this issue is highly important in the case of Cloud Computing, where the benefit of private companies and public institutions in the field can be highly increased by minimizing the energy usage. Similarly, minimizing energy consumption in high performance computing centers will, in addition to saving power consumption, require less cooling mechanisms.

These new challenges require innovative and effective optimization solutions for minimizing power consumption in distributed systems, at the levels of efficient use of computing resources, network, virtualization, etc.

The special issue will primarily focus on theoretical and practical novel solutions that advance the research in energy efficient distributed systems. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Energy-efficient resource allocation
- Energy-efficient protocols/algorithms
- Energy-efficient network management
- Energy-efficient memory/storage management
- Energy-efficient holistic approaches
- Virtualization techniques for energy efficiency
- Novel network, computing, and memory models with energy considerations
- Energy-efficient service provisioning
- Thermal-aware solutions
