Background
----------

The Contrail summer school on Cloud Computing Systems and Applications
is the successor of successful previous events held in September 2009
(Oxford, UK), July 2010 (Reisenburg, Germany) and June 2011 (Hyeres,
France).

The summer school will include a mix of lectures and hands-on sessions
in the domain of Cloud computing systems and applications. Lectures
from leading researchers in the domain will discuss Cloud technologies
which are already shaping the future of computing infrastructures.
Hands-on sessions will give participants practical experience in this
rapidly-changing field and prepare them to use the Cloud and
participate in its future developments. Hands-on sessions will be
based on the Contrail Cloud system.

Aims
----

The aims of the Contrail Summer School are:

    * To introduce participants to the Cloud computing paradigm,
      illustrated by examples of real, demanding Cloud applications;
    * To present IaaS and PaaS cloud systems;
    * To provide lectures and practical courses on system-level techniques
      to achieve scalability, elasticity, quality of service and security
      in Cloud systems;
    * To provide a forum for participants to discuss their research work
      and share experience with experienced researchers.

Target audience
---------------

The school is open to postgraduate students (MSc, PhD) and young
researchers (from technical industries, research laboratories and
academic environments) who have recently started (or are about to
start) working on cloud research projects. Prospective students from
computer science, computational science and application backgrounds
are encouraged to join: the only pre-requisite is basic knowledge in
distributed systems.

Technical program
-----------------

The school will start on Monday July 23rd with a walking tour of
Almere, one of the most technology-savvy cities in the
Netherlands. The technical program will then run until Friday July
27th at noon.

The topics covered in the Summer School include:

    * Introduction to cloud platforms and applications
    * Scientific Cloud applications
    * Platform-as-a-Service environments
    * High-Performance Computing in the Cloud
    * Cloud federations and Cloud busting
    * Federated Cloud security
    * Cloud file systems
    * Cloud network virtualization
    * Cloud infrastructures
    * SLA management

Doctoral Symposium
------------------

There will be one afternoon dedicated to discuss research topics with
the school participants. PhD and MSc students are encouraged to give
short presentations about their work. We will deliver an award for the
best presentation.

Venue
-----

The Contrail Summer School will take place in Almere, a modern city
located 20 minutes from Amsterdam. Almere was built in the most recent
polder of the Netherlands (dating from 1976), three meters below sea
level.

Almere stands at the forefront of ICT development. It hosts major
academic data centers as well as a unique, citizen-driven desktop grid
connecting over 8000 computers. The Almere Grid participates in many
genome research studies, and is also used as a test-bed for Contrail
Cloud technologies.

Registration
------------

Participants are expected to register at
http://www.summerschoolalmere.nl/application
(in the second screen, please select the course on "Cloud Technology")

Registration fees: 550 Euros, including course materials and
excursions.
Registration deadline: June 11th 2012.

Please note that the number of participants is limited: better
register early!

Thanks to generous support from the city of Almere, accommodation is
available at very competitive rates: 120 euro for the entire duration
of the school (on the basis of shared double rooms, including
breakfast and free Internet access).

Practical information
---------------------

Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop, which will be
especially useful for the hands-on sessions.
