Steve,
Good to hear there's some improvement.  Here are a couple suggestions.

32 bit:
The AGServiceManager log file is normally in 
  ~/.AccessGrid/Logs/AGServiceManager.log
but if there's an error before initialization, you might find information 
in a .aglog file in /tmp.

It looks like there's an exception calling AGTkConfig.instance(0) in 
Toolkit.py.  If you want to debug that call, note that the AGTkConfig 
class being used is defined in Platform/unix/Config.py.
It could be that the necessary toolkit directories don't exist -- they are 
usually created at install time or with CvsSetup.py:
  python tools/CvsSetup.py -a .
  . env-init.sh

64 bit:
  I'm not sure what the real problem is, but if you use grid-proxy-init 
with -cert and -key options and the certificate files you exported, you 
should be able to tell if there is a problem with your globus environment.
  If that works, trying an anonymous certificate from within the AG 
Toolkit is another good (and quick) test.
