Sorry, I suppose it would have been good to include a bit of an outline
of what the session today covers. Here it is.

David Horvath.US Department of Agriculture

Application of Arabidopsis microarrays to Study Dormancy and Growth in
Leafy Spurge
and Other Poorly Characterized Plant Species.

Leafy spurge is a tenacious invasive weed that maintains a perennial
growth pattern through the production and maintenance of underground
adventitious buds. Initial studies indicated two signals (above ground
shoot derived auxin and leaf derived sugar) could prevent underground
bud growth. We have used Arabidopsis microarrays to identify genes that
are preferentially expressed in growing shoot apices of leafy spurge,
wild oat and poplar. Significant hybridization of clones to the labeled
cDNA from leafy spurge ranged from 23-47%. Some false negatives, but no
known false positives have been identified in subsequent experiments.
Several differentially expressed genes have been identified and further
characterized. Mining the available Arabidopsis expression databases has
provided interesting and valuable insight into the signal transduction
processes regulating these genes in both Arabidopsis and leafy spurge.
These findings should extend usefulness of array technology to many
poorly characterized plant species.

to join us today at 11:00 am central time (sorry for the late notice)
for an hour long Virtual Seminar. We will be in the Windmer Room
virtual venue,

the server for the ppt slides is:
agdisplay.ndsu.nodak.edu

ppt slides are available at this url for download:
http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/virtual-genomics/horvath_seminar.htm

I will have NDSU up around 10:00 am central (maybe a little earlier) so
if you want to come in and test a bit and say Hi to me feel free!!!
Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
