those are good ideas.  we were/are working on software to support this
sort of thing outside the context of the AG technology, but with the
intent of using it in our AG control research.  i've included a paper
that describes the technology and ideas we have been working on -- a
system called indiva. the system supports abstractions/commands for
manipulating mbone conferences (i.e., sessions and streams), streaming
media services (e.g., encoders and decoders), and a/v equipment (e.g.,
cameras, routing switchers, etc.).

there is an early prototype of the system available for you to play with
- check out http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/projects/indiva.  this is early,
buggy software, but you might find it an interesting system to play
with.
