Yup - single processor.  Up till now no problem.

Thanks to Art and Bob for relaying Gentner's replies.  To my
simple way of thinking a process that is driving a single serial
port at 9600 baud shouldn't be written in a way that hits another
process that is handling 10s of Mbits/sec of video data quite
happily, single processor or dual processor.  I'll get back to them
myself and see whether there's a workaround.
