NSF PRESS CONFERENCE
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE FOR ALL URBAN STUDENTS
To announce the preliminary results of an 
evaluative study of NSF's Urban Systemic 
Initiatives (USI).  Since 1993, the USI 
program has been a catalyst for large-scale 
systemic change for improving the science and 
mathematics achievement of ALL urban students.  
This report presents evidence of some noteworthy 
gains.   Assessments show that USI students have 
made gains in science and mathematics performance, 
while reducing achievement gaps between racial/
ethnic groups.
