Bill,

I'm sorry for not explaining myself clearly to Linda, when she asked what
needed to be done for the LBL Access Grid node to be available.

Running an Access Grid node requires preparation and rehearsal, especially
if it is to be an effective replacement for travel. This means training
someone to act as node operator. The best way to get this training is to
participate in "Nanocruises", which are multi-way live tests of the
technology held twice per week.

In these tests, IP Multicast is essential because of the multi-way nature
of them. The node operator will need to become particularly familiar with
issues relating to audio--both network and backup telephone. Echo
cancellation is absolutely required, and getting that configured can be tricky.

So yes--IP multicast is required, and so we strongly recommend that the
latest version of the IP Multicast Beacon software be started and run
24x7. But in addition, an Access Grid node operator needs to participate
in the Nanocruises to learn the protocols (technical and interpersonal)
that make the Access Grid effective.

Please see http://www-fp.mcs.anl.gov/fl/accessgrid/schedule.htm for a
schedule of planned Access Grid events, including Nanocruises.

The people on the ag-tech at mcs.anl.gov mailing list are ready and waiting to
answer any other questions you may have. I am personally available to make
whatever efforts are necessary to deploy native IP multicast in your
environment, up to and including personally traveling there (as I have done
in certain situations elsewhere).
