It is for this reasons why I like having "More than 2 kernels when yum updating".  See http://www.accessgrid.org/node/1016 on how to implement this.

Actually, I think you are correct.  My problems did coincide with a kernel update.  I'm currently 
running 2.6.25.4-10.fc8.  Looks like I still have kernel-2.6.24.7-92.fc8 on the box, I'll see if the 
problem exists on that kernel also.
