I am not sure if you have solved your problem.
I met the same problem, but I found a better way to get around this problem.
Instead of modifying 'byte.c' you could put full path to your restart file in .rea file.

Such as

                 1  PRESOLVE/RESTART OPTIONS  *****
/your/path/to/case/*0.f00001
