Why do you suspect that? The fact that you get noises when there is room
noise implies to me there might be a feedback path from local microphones
to local speakers.
Also check your gentner matrix to ensure that a local reinforcement path
isn't enabled.

I think the two things may be related. It sounds like the kernel audio
drivers are now getting loaded instead of the OSS drivers. The switch in
audio drivers might have made the code that turns off the feedback paths on
the card not work.
