Is this behavior dependent on the receiving primitive? A string array passed to an app() and placed on the command line of the app is expanded into space-separated strings. The same array passed to @strjoin() yields the expected string of separated array elements. But the same array passed to @strcat is not evaluated but instead becomes a single string with the value "fnames:string[int] - Open". Is the difference between these two behaviors determined by the primitive or context in which the array is evaluated, with @strjoin() and app() command-line expansion performing an expansion of the array's value, while being referenced by @strcat() does not force such evaluation? This is the behavior in the test example below. - Mike type file; app (file o) sh (string cmd) { sh "-c" cmd stdout=@o; } app shf (file cmd) { sh stdin=@cmd; } app (file o) echo (string a[]) { echo "array: " a stdout=@o; } foreach year in [1979:1980] { string find = @strcat("ls -1 /home/wilde/swift/lab/*.swift"); string fnames[] = readData(sh(find)); // string cdo = @strcat("echo ", @strjoin(fnames," ")); string cdo = @strcat("echo ", fnames); file script; file echo_out; echo_out = echo(fnames); script = writeData(cdo); shf(script); } -- Michael Wilde Computation Institute, University of Chicago Mathematics and Computer Science Division Argonne National Laboratory From hategan at mcs.anl.gov Tue Dec 11 23:10:30 2012 From: hategan at mcs.anl.gov (Mihael Hategan) Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2012 21:10:30 -0800 Subject: [Swift-devel] Confusion about evaluation of array arguments In-Reply-To: <1724362452.86299.1355287742250.JavaMail.root@zimbra.anl.gov> References: <1724362452.86299.1355287742250.JavaMail.root@zimbra.anl.gov> Message-ID: <1355289030.16815.9.camel@blabla> app() unfolds the array. strjoin(string[], delim) expects an array as the first argument and its contract is that it joins the elements of that array. strcat(...) expects a list of stuff as varargs, converts each of them to a string, and concatenates the resulting strings. So if you pass an array, that will be the first of the varargs. I.e. I dont see where this will get placed into a shell for correct interpretation. When I tried a simple example of this method using "echo" and "wc" as the apps, they fail as I would expect: the args within "" do not get separately tokenized and the "|" is placed on the command line within an arg and is not interpreted by any shell. I dont think I perturbed this behavior with the recent /usr/bin/time/APP_RESOURCES change in 0.94RC2, but thats possible. Can anyone explain whether the app command line should work, and if so, how? What was happening was interesting: the user was using a version of Swift in which I had introduced a bug. When I first added APP_RESOURCES, I used an eval command to make the argument passing work easier when inserting /usr/bin/time in front of the command. This broke several other swift tests and use cases, so I had to fix it to comply with prior Swift arg processing. However, the user's app showed how useful it could be to allow a full shell pipeline to be passed as the command body in an app. This seems to merit more thought, but I guess can be done using sh -c. - Mike ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Michael Wilde" > To: "swift-devel" > Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2012 11:19:20 AM > Subject: [Swift-devel] Confused about app() command arg parsing/passing > Im working with a user that has an app coded like this: > > app (file n) wgrib2 ( file g2, file nc_table) { > wgrib2 @g2 "-match ':(TMP:2 m |APCP:|CRAIN:|DSWRF:)' -new_grid_winds > earth -new_grid_interpolation neighbor -new_grid latlon 220.04\ > 1666666666:960:0.083333333333 20.041666666666:480:0.0833333333333 - | > wgrib2 - -order we:sn -nc3 -nc_table" @nc_table "-netcdf" @n; > } > > The user says this app works correctly, but I dont see how: > > - I dont see how args bundled within "" from -match through -nc_table > get tokenized into single apps > > - even more mystifying is I dont see how the parts of the command line > around "- | wgrib2" work. I'm watching a restart on beagle now of a restart log in which about 200K apps had completed. Its going rather slow, and top says that the swift jvm is only using about 10% of one core. Im wondering if the read() length is very low, which is possibly slowing down the restart when the filesystem on which the .rlog file resides is very congested? If so, would a bigger read() buffer size help? We can try looking at whats happening with strace, but the restart process looks to me to be IO bound.
