also should have the principle that if any logging 
messages for a class/function_name are in this new syntax, then all 
messages for that class/function_name are in this syntax.

I think its likely that you intended this in your proposal.

the motivation being that this makes it easier to figure out how to 
appropriately parse a line (if its class name is vdl:execute2, I'm 
guaranteed to have it in this format).
