Satish,

If I just run, /Applications/MATLAB_R2018a.app/bin/matlab -nojvm -nodisplay, then Matlab can run normally in the terminal as
Scott-Grad-MBP:~ zhihui$ /Applications/MATLAB_R2018a.app/bin/matlab -nojvm -nodisplay

Version 9.4.0.813654 (R2018a)
WARNING: Found Matlab at /Applications/MATLAB_R2018a.app but unable to run
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

So configure attempted to run Matlab - and perhaps got an error. What do you get if you run this manually?

/Applications/MATLAB_R2018a.app/bin/matlab -nojvm -nodisplay -r "display(['Version ' version]); exit"
echo $?

I could not use the latest version right now, because the project is maintained by other people. If I update petsc, I will break the whole project. But we will use the latest version when the maintenance guys update the dependences.
