It's pretty old and doesn't apply cleanly, but see attached.

We use a similar idea (working) in Firedrake (see https://github.com/firedrakeproject/firedrake/blob/master/firedrake/matrix_free/operators.py#L16)

That latter algorithm has had more testing.
