To some extent - this discussion resonates as 'petsc+buildsystem'
discussion.

And the eventual satisfactory solution was to merge buildsystem into
petsc and automatically export 'buildsystem' part into its own
standalone repo.

BTW: is that automatic export of buildsystem-standalone still working?
