Agreed.  And the current conventions still only support one version of
a library.  I think the automated installer giving you a well-tuned
and performant library should still be the default.  Anybody who wants
to build a debugging build with the intense PETSc debugging support
can use the PETSC_DIR/PETSC_ARCH technique.
