Emacs 22.3.1??? Barry what kind of arcane emacs are you using? Carbon emacs?
Why not use:

http://emacsformacosx.com/

It's cocoa and runs in 64bit which we all know is far superior than 32bit.
It's double the bits! And yes, it is emacs 23.
