pnetcdf vs. netcdf4 outstanding questions

Gentlemen:

 

As our community code must presently select one of these options, I was
hoping to find a coherent compare/contract discussion somewhere "on the
web".  From the wiki, it looks like this must have existed at one point.  In
particular, I refer to the "pnetcdf_vs_netcdf4" bullet on the top page.  It
is greyed out at the moment, but implies that something interesting once
lived there.  In lieu of this, perhaps one of you knows of another such
discussion or summary?

 

If nothing of the sort exists, then I must start with some simple tests of
my own.  A tutorial with some bootstrap examples would be helpful.  The best
I can find are the sample codes in the /test directory.  An older - circa
2008 - mailing list archives discussion indicates that there was an imminent
plan to gather up user submitted examples.   I can't seem to locate those.
