This test case was a big help.  I think I have found the problem: our
configure-time tests were not being honored because nccconfig.h was
not being included soon enough.  This also caused problems for the
prototype of malloc, for example, as well as some cases where casts to
off_t were getting bizzare results. 

I don't know if the next pre-release will fix the earlier CDF-2
problems you were having, but I think it might make a real difference.
