You are right. Under Window 7, I searched ‘mpiexec.exe’ and found several ‘mpiexec.exe’ on my computer. so I put ‘C:\Program Files\MPICH2\bin’ into the head of the PATH environmental variable. Please see the ‘PATH’ variable for details. Then I did tests again and the problem did not occur. 



I did compiled cxxpi.exe cpi.exe fpi.exe under MS Studio 2008 and the latest MPICH2 lib was used, I guess. Please see the following snapshots.

Try the following commands and let us know the output of each command 



# Run "which mpiexec" (To make sure that you are using the right mpiexec) 

# Run "mpiexec -n 2 c:\Progra~1\MPICH2\examples\cpi.exe" 



Have you compiled "exe\cpi.exe" and "exe\cxxpi.exe" with the latest MPICH2 libraries ?

This means the ‘mpiexec.exe’ must be with ‘cpi.exe, cpxx.exe, and fpi.exe’ under the same directory. Otherwise the problem is occurred. 

If I copy ‘mpiexec.exe’ into the directory where cpi.exe is and run mpiexec –n 12 cpi.exe. then the test is successful.

I did it in terms of your suggestions. But the problem is still there. 



I run tests as follows: 



I entered C:\Program Files\MPICH2\examples 

and ran mpiexec -n 12 cpi.exe 

the error prompt is as before: 

"CreateProcess failed, error 2 

Unable to start the local smpd manager" 



However, if I entered c:\Program Files\MPICH2\bin 

and ran mpiexec -n 12 ../examples/cpi.exe 

test is successful and cpi.exe works well under 12 CPUs. 



This means I cannot do tests under the directory C:\Program Files\MPICH2\examples where cpi.exe is. 



I look forward to your suggestions again and have a good day.

Uninstall your existing version of MPICH2 and follow the instructions in Section 9.4 (NOT 9.1) of the installer's guide (http://www.mcs.anl.gov/research/projects/mpich2/documentation/files/mpich2-1.4.1-installguide.pdf).
