You connect from another machine C to A and B, or is A your desktop one?

Please try the latest version 1.4 which doesn't use mpd any longer but a daemonless startup of the tasks on slave nodes. You can compile it on your into $HOME/local/mpich2-1.4 or alike and set an appropriate PATH thereto.
Was the 1.0.8 instealled ubuntu by default?
