[mpich-discuss] unable to find mpd.conf file

The best option is to upgrade to the latest version (1.3.1).
If you don't want to use that, you can use mpiexec.hydra in 1.2.1p1,
instead of mpiexec. The usage of mpiexec.hydra is described here:
