Here's what I did on Lucid:

$ apt-get install hwloc

$ Downloaded and installed 
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mpich2/libmpich2-2_1.3.1-1_ia64.deb

$ Downloaded and installed 
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mpich2/mpich2_1.3.1-1_amd64.deb

That seemed to work fine.

Shaandar: can you try that instead?
