MPICH1 is no longer maintained, so I wouldn't be surprised when at one point it's no longer working out of the box. Maybe the author of the instructions hassled with the mpd startup and mpdboot at that time, which was used in former versions of  MPICH2. Just use MPICH2 in version 1.3.1 and it should work with the default Hydra startup manager similar to the old MPICH(1). As an alternative you can also try Open MPI.

NB: there is also a bug in the page you listed: to use a notation like "node1:2" it was necessary to compile MPICH(1) with "-comm=shared".
