I should have attached the output for config.log for MPICH2 in my last

Hi Steve,

just use

./configure -prefix=/home/sjberg/mpich -enable-f77 -enable-f90 (is this 
correct?)

setting the CC, F77, ... variables should be sufficient for the 
configure script to pick up the correct compiler.

You can use

./configure --help

to get a description of the flags ...
